Today we will be giving a special recognition to all of the Emergency Medical Technicians of Peekskill VAC. Currently we have 42 EMTs in our family and this number keeps growing with members achieving this title by going through intense training.
Most EMT Classes run about 3-5 months at a time but do vary, with classroom hours and rotations amounting to approximately 160+/- hours. In EMT class people will learn how to don and doff gloves properly, airway management, CPR, how to perform Trauma assessments, medical assessments, administer medications, complete patient care reports and much more!
Throughout these classes each person must maintain a grade of at least a 70 to participate in the state exams. The state exams include a practical session which tests each persons skills on 6 different stations and they must pass all 6 stations. Following that there is a state written exam which consists of all material covered since day one of class.
Once these individuals obtain their EMT Certificates, it does not stop there! They are then required to attend and complete 72 hours of continuing medical education classes over the next three years before their certificate expires. These classes range from one or two hours, sometimes more, in which EMT review and practice certain skills and knowledge. For most EMTs achieving these 72 hours requires them to attend during times when they are not riding the ambulance or pulling duty.
These EMTs also go through a "clearing" period here at Peekskill VAC. We have them partner up with experienced EMTs who then help guide these newer EMTs the ropes of the trade and ensure that they are comfortable with the various tasks at hand. Once they go through this period they then obtain the status as a "Crew Chief".
Thank you to all of our dedicated EMTs here at Peekskill VAC! Below are various photos from our archives of EMTs within our organization. These are just a few of our volunteer EMTs
